ROS (Robot Operating System)
TMA-ROS1-1.5.3
Ensure authentication required for single user mode
MediumLevel 1Automatedros
Description
Single user mode is used for recovery when the system detects an issue during boot or by manual selection from the bootloader. The audit requires the root account to have a password set in /etc/shadow, so single-user mode asks for it. Host-level control from the CIS ROS Melodic benchmark (Ubuntu 18.04 robot hosts); run as root.
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
shell
[ -r /etc/shadow ] || exit 1
grep -Eq '^root:[*!]:' /etc/shadow && echo 'root has no password (single-user mode unprotected)' || echo compliant- Expected output
compliant
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
Run the following command and follow the prompts to set a password for the root user: # passwd root
