TMA-POSTGRES-5.4

Ensure login via "host" TCP/IP Socket is configured correctly

HighLevel 1Manual reviewpostgres

Description

A large number of authentication METHODs are available for hosts connecting using TCP/IP sockets, including: ; trust ; reject ; md5 ; scram-sha-256 ; password ; gss ; sspi ; ident ; pam ; ldap ; radius ; cert ; oauth METHODs trust, password, and ident are not to be used for remote logins.

How it is checked

Audit method: Manual review

This recommendation cannot be checked automatically. A scan lists it with these instructions when you pass --include-manual.

Review 'host' lines in pg_hba.conf (SELECT * FROM pg_hba_file_rules WHERE type LIKE 'host%';). Test psql 'host=<server> user=postgres sslmode=disable' and sslmode=require locally and remotely: only intended encrypted, password-authenticated (scram-sha-256) logins may succeed.

How it is fixed

Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch

Use hostssl lines with scram-sha-256 for required users/networks and hostnossl ... reject for the rest, e.g. hostssl all postgres 0.0.0.0/0 scram-sha-256 and hostnossl all postgres 0.0.0.0/0 reject, then SELECT pg_reload_conf();
