TMA-POSTGRES-3.1.3

Ensure the logging collector is enabled

MediumLevel 1Automatedpostgres

Description

The logging collector is a background process that captures log messages sent to stderr and redirects them into log files. The logging_collector setting must be enabled in order for this process to run. It can only be set at the server start. Runs psql as ${PGUSER:-postgres} against ${PGDATABASE:-postgres}; set PGHOST/PGPORT and use ~/.pgpass (not PGPASSWORD, see 1.6/1.7) when peer authentication is not available.

How it is checked

Audit method: SQL query

sql_query
out=$(psql -X -U "${PGUSER:-postgres}" -d "${PGDATABASE:-postgres}" -tAc "SHOW logging_collector" 2>/dev/null) || exit 1; printf '%s\n' "$out"
Expected output
on

How it is fixed

Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch

ALTER SYSTEM SET logging_collector = 'on'; then restart PostgreSQL (systemctl restart postgresql-18); this parameter only changes at server start.
