Ensure sudo is configured correctly

MediumLevel 1Manual reviewyugabytedb

Description

It is common to have more than one authorized individual administering the YugabyteDB service at the Operating System level. It is also quite common to permit login privileges to individuals on a YugabyteDB host who otherwise are not authorized to access the server's data cluster and files.

How it is checked

Audit method: Manual review

This recommendation cannot be checked automatically. A scan lists it with these instructions when you pass --include-manual.

Review /etc/sudoers and /etc/sudoers.d: escalation to the yugabyte account must be granted only to an approved DBA group (e.g. %dba ALL= /bin/su - yugabyte, file mode 600). As a non-member run sudo su - yugabyte (must be refused) and as a DBA group member confirm it succeeds; any broader grant is a finding.

How it is fixed

Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch

As superuser root, execute the following commands: # echo '%dba ALL= /bin/su - yugabyte' > /etc/sudoers.d/yugabyte # chmod 600 /etc/sudoers.d/yugabyte This grants any Operating System user that is a member of the dba group to use sudo su - yugabyte to become the yugabyte user. Ensure that all Operating System user's that need such access are members of the group.
