Check Permissions on User Home Directories

MediumLevel 1Automatedsolaris

Description

While the system administrator can establish secure permissions for users' home directories, the users can easily override these. Group or world-writable user home directories may enable malicious users to steal or modify other users' data or to gain another user's system privileges. Audit: automated read-only check derived from the CIS audit procedure; it prints "compliant" when the control is met.

How it is checked

Audit method: Shell command

shell
command -v logins >/dev/null 2>&1 || exit 1; out=$( { for dir in $(logins -ox | awk -F: '($8 == "PS") { print $6 }'); do find "$dir" -type d -prune \( -perm -g+w -o -perm -o+r -o -perm -o+w -o -perm -o+x \) -ls; done ; } 2>/dev/null ); [ -z "$out" ] && echo compliant || printf '%s\n' "$out" | head -n 20
Expected output
compliant

How it is fixed

Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch

Correct or justify any items discovered in the Audit step. Determine if any user directory permissions are world-readable, writable, or executable, and work with those users to determine the best course of action in accordance with site policy.
