TMA-SOLARIS-9.6
Ensure Password Fields are Not Empty
CriticalLevel 1Automatedsolaris
Description
An account with an empty password field means that anybody may log in as that user without providing a password at all (assuming that the value PASSREQ=NO is set in /etc/default/login). All accounts must have passwords, be configured as "Non-login," or be locked. Audit: automated read-only check derived from the CIS audit procedure; it prints "compliant" when the control is met.
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
shell
command -v logins >/dev/null 2>&1 || exit 1; out=$( { logins -p ; } 2>/dev/null ); [ -z "$out" ] && echo compliant || printf '%s\n' "$out" | head -n 20- Expected output
compliant
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
Use the passwd -l command to lock accounts that are not permitted to execute commands . Use the passwd -N command to set accounts to be non-login.
