Check That Users Are Assigned Home Directories
Description
passwd defines a home directory that each user is placed in upon login. If there is no defined home directory, a user will be placed in / and will not be able to write any files or have local environment variables set. All users must be assigned a home directory in passwd. Audit: automated read-only check derived from the CIS audit procedure; it prints "compliant" when the control is met.
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
command -v logins >/dev/null 2>&1 || exit 1; out=$( { logins -xo | awk -F: '($6 == "") { print $1 }' ; } 2>/dev/null ); [ -z "$out" ] && echo compliant || printf '%s\n' "$out" | head -n 20- Expected output
compliant
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
Correct or justify any items discovered in the Audit step. Determine if there exists any users who are in passwd but do not have a home directory, and work with those users to determine the best course of action in accordance with site policy.
