Check Groups in passwd
Description
Over time, system administration errors and changes can lead to groups being defined in passwd but not in group. Groups defined in passwd but not in group file pose a threat to system security since group permissions are not properly managed. Audit: automated read-only check derived from the CIS audit procedure; it prints "compliant" when the control is met.
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
command -v logins >/dev/null 2>&1 || exit 1; out=$( { logins -xo | awk -F: '($3 == "") { print $1 }' ; } 2>/dev/null ); [ -z "$out" ] && echo compliant || printf '%s\n' "$out" | head -n 20- Expected output
compliant
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
Correct or justify any items discovered in the Audit step. Determine if any groups are in passwd but not in group, and work with those users or group owners to determine the best course of action in accordance with site policy.
