Ensure login and logout events are collected
Description
Monitor login and logout events. The parameters below track changes to files associated with login/logout events. • The file /var/log/faillog tracks failed events from login. • The file /var/log/lastlog maintain records of the last time a user successfully logged in. • The file /var/log/tallylog maintains records of failures via the pam_tally2 module Note: Reloading the auditd config to set active settings requires the auditd service to be restarted, and may require a system reboot.
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
alt0() { command -v grep >/dev/null 2>&1 || { echo "step1: grep not installed"; return 1; }; o=$(bash -c 'grep logins /etc/audit/rules.d/*.rules' 2>&1); printf '%s\n' "$o" | tr -s ' \t' ' ' | sed 's/^ //;s/ $//' | grep -Fxq -- '/etc/audit/rules.d/logins.rules:-w /var/log/faillog -p wa -k logins' || { echo step1: missing '/etc/audit/rules.d/logins.rules:-w /var/log/faillog -p wa -k'; return 1; }; printf '%s\n' "$o" | tr -s ' \t' ' ' | sed 's/^ //;s/ $//' | grep -Fxq -- '/etc/audit/rules.d/logins.rules:-w /var/log/lastlog -p wa -k logins' || { echo step1: missing '/etc/audit/rules.d/logins.rules:-w /var/log/lastlog -p wa -k'; return 1; }; printf '%s\n' "$o" | tr -s ' \t' ' ' | sed 's/^ //;s/ $//' | grep -Fxq -- '/etc/audit/rules.d/logins.rules:-w /var/log/tallylog -p wa -k logins' || { echo step1: missing '/etc/audit/rules.d/logins.rules:-w /var/log/tallylog -p wa -'; return 1; }; command -v auditctl >/dev/null 2>&1 || { echo "step2: auditctl not installed"; return 1; }; command -v grep >/dev/null 2>&1 || { echo "step2: grep not installed"; return 1; }; o=$(bash -c 'auditctl -l | grep logins' 2>&1); printf '%s\n' "$o" | tr -s ' \t' ' ' | sed 's/^ //;s/ $//' | grep -Fxq -- '-w /var/log/faillog -p wa -k logins' || { echo step2: missing '-w /var/log/faillog -p wa -k logins'; return 1; }; printf '%s\n' "$o" | tr -s ' \t' ' ' | sed 's/^ //;s/ $//' | grep -Fxq -- '-w /var/log/lastlog -p wa -k logins' || { echo step2: missing '-w /var/log/lastlog -p wa -k logins'; return 1; }; printf '%s\n' "$o" | tr -s ' \t' ' ' | sed 's/^ //;s/ $//' | grep -Fxq -- '-w /var/log/tallylog -p wa -k logins' || { echo step2: missing '-w /var/log/tallylog -p wa -k logins'; return 1; }; }; if alt0; then echo compliant; fi- Expected output
compliant
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
Edit or create a file in the /etc/audit/rules.d/ directory ending in .rules Example: vi /etc/audit/rules.d/logins.rules and add the following lines: -w /var/log/faillog -p wa -k logins -w /var/log/lastlog -p wa -k logins -w /var/log/tallylog -p wa -k logins
