Ensure separate partition exists for /tmp

LowLevel 2Automatedlinux

Description

The /tmp directory is a world-writable directory used for temporary storage by all users and some applications.

How it is checked

Audit method: Shell command

shell
alt0() { command -v grep >/dev/null 2>&1 || { echo "step1: grep not installed"; return 1; }; command -v mount >/dev/null 2>&1 || { echo "step1: mount not installed"; return 1; }; o=$(bash -c 'mount | grep /tmp' 2>&1); printf '%s\n' "$o" | tr -s ' \t' '  ' | sed 's/^ //;s/ $//' | grep -Fxq -- 'tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime)' || { echo step1: missing 'tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime)'; return 1; }; }; if alt0; then echo compliant; fi
Expected output
compliant

How it is fixed

Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch

For new installations, during installation create a custom partition setup and specify a separate partition for /tmp . For systems that were previously installed, create a new partition and configure /etc/fstab as appropriate.
