TMA-PRINTER-FIRMWARE-CURRENT

Ensure printer firmware is current and only signed firmware can be installed

HighLevel 1Manual reviewprinter

Description

Printer firmware regularly receives fixes for remotely exploitable flaws (PJL/PostScript, IPP, EWS). Accepting unsigned firmware allows persistent implants.

How it is checked

Audit method: Manual review

This recommendation cannot be checked automatically. A scan lists it with these instructions when you pass --include-manual.

In the Embedded Web Server (EWS: browse to https://<printer-ip>/ and sign in as administrator; HP: Security / Networking tabs, Xerox: Properties > Security / Connectivity, Ricoh: Device Management > Configuration, Canon: Settings/Registration > Network Settings / Security Settings): read the firmware version (HP: Information > Configuration Page / Firmware Upgrade; Xerox: Properties > General Setup > Configuration Report) and compare it with the latest release and security bulletins on the vendor support site. Confirm firmware signature verification / whitelisting is on (e.g. HP Code Signing / Sure Start, Xerox firmware verification, 'Allow firmware upgrade via PJL/print job' disabled) and that remote firmware upgrade is restricted to administrators.

How it is fixed

Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch

Download the current firmware from the vendor support portal, verify its checksum/signature, and install via EWS (Firmware Upgrade) or fleet tooling during a maintenance window. Disable firmware upgrade via print jobs (PJL/port 9100) and enable signed-firmware enforcement.
