TMA-MYSQL-2.10
Use Dual Passwords to Enable Higher Frequency Password Rotation
Description
Dual passwords act as a tool to encourage password rotations in cases where a synchronized password change is not viable. By having a time delta to have old and new passwords in place, the process of replacing old passwords with new passwords within applications is simplified.
How it is checked
Audit method: Manual review
This recommendation cannot be checked automatically. A scan lists it with these instructions when you pass --include-manual.
Run SELECT user, host FROM mysql.user WHERE LENGTH(user_attributes->>'$.additional_password') > 0; An account that still has a secondary (dual) password after its password rotation has completed is a fail.
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
ALTER USER '<user>'@'<host>' DISCARD OLD PASSWORD; once all clients use the new password.
