MongoDB
TMA-MONGODB-4.4
Ensure Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) is enabled
Description
The Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) is a computer security standard used to certify software modules and libraries that encrypt and decrypt data securely. You can configure MongoDB to run with a FIPS 140-2 certified library for OpenSSL. FIPS is a property of the encryption system and not the access control system. However, the environment requires FIPS compliant encryption and access control. Checks the YAML config file /etc/mongod.conf (SKIP when it does not exist). FIPS mode requires MongoDB Enterprise and a FIPS-validated OpenSSL.
How it is checked
Audit method: File pattern
- File
/etc/mongod.conf- Pattern
(?m)^[ \t]*FIPSMode:[ \t]*['\x22]?true\b
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
Use FIPS-compliant certificates, set net.tls.FIPSMode: true in /etc/mongod.conf and restart mongod; confirm 'FIPS 140-2 mode activated' in the log.
