TMA-IIS-1.1

Ensure 'Web content' is on non-system partition

MediumLevel 1Automatediis

Description

Web resources published through IIS are mapped via Virtual Directories to physical locations on disk. It is recommended to map all Virtual Directories to a non-system disk volume. Fails when any site or virtual directory physicalPath is on the system drive. PowerShell 5.1 with the WebAdministration module; run elevated. CIS marks this recommendation Manual; the automated check implements its audit procedure.

How it is checked

Audit method: Shell command

shell
Import-Module WebAdministration -ErrorAction Stop; $sd = $env:SystemDrive; $bad = @(Get-Website | Where-Object { [Environment]::ExpandEnvironmentVariables($_.physicalPath) -like "$sd*" }) + @(Get-WebVirtualDirectory | Where-Object { [Environment]::ExpandEnvironmentVariables($_.physicalPath) -like "$sd*" }); if ($bad.Count -eq 0) { 'compliant' } else { 'noncompliant' }
Expected output
compliant

How it is fixed

Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch

Move content to a non-system volume (e.g. D:\inetpub) and update each site/virtual directory: Set-ItemProperty IIS:\Sites\<site> -Name physicalPath -Value <path>.
