Ensure filesystem integrity is regularly checked
MediumLevel 1Automatedfreebsd
Description
Periodic checking of the filesystem integrity is needed to detect changes to the filesystem. Periodic file checking allows the system administrator to determine on a regular basis if critical files have been changed in an unauthorized fashion. Audit: automated read-only check derived from the CIS audit procedure; it prints "compliant" when the control is met.
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
shell
{ crontab -l -u root 2>/dev/null; cat /etc/crontab /etc/cron.d/* 2>/dev/null; } | grep -v "^[[:space:]]*#" | grep -Eq "aide[[:space:]].*--(check|update)" && echo compliant || echo "no aide --check cron job"- Expected output
compliant
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
Run the following command: # crontab -u root -e Add the following line to the crontab: @daily /usr/bin/lockf -s -t 0 /var/run/aide.lock /usr/local/bin/aide --check
