Host must display a login banner for the DCUI and Host Client

MediumLevel 1Automatedvmware

Description

Enabling a login banner on the Direct Console User Interface (DCUI) and the Host Client interfaces provides a mechanism to display legal notices or organizational announcements at login. The parameter governing this behavior is Annotations.WelcomeMessage, with the recommended value being a text string aligned with organizational or legal advisories. The audit reads Annotations.WelcomeMessage with esxcli and requires a non-empty banner; confirm the text matches the approved legal notice. Runs in the ESXi Shell (busybox sh) as root.

How it is checked

Audit method: Shell command

shell
out=$(esxcli system settings advanced list -o /Annotations/WelcomeMessage 2>/dev/null) || exit 1
v=$(printf '%s\n' "$out" | sed -n 's/^ *String Value: *//p' | head -n 1)
if [ -n "$v" ]; then echo compliant; else echo "/Annotations/WelcomeMessage = '$v' (empty banner)"; fi
Expected output
compliant

How it is fixed

Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch

Set the approved banner using Get-VMHost | Get-AdvancedSetting -Name Annotations.WelcomeMessage | Set-AdvancedSetting -Value '<approved banner>' - Confirm:$false, or configure it in Host > Configure > System > Advanced System Settings. Verify it displays in DCUI/Host Client.
