VMware ESXi
TMA-ESXI9-2.6
Host must have reliable time synchronization sources
Description
Ensuring reliable time synchronization is crucial as various functions like cryptography, audit logging, cluster operations, and incident response/forensics are heavily dependent on synchronized time. Utilizing at least four NTP sources is recommended for achieving reliable time synchronization. The audit runs esxcli system ntp get and requires NTP to be enabled with at least one server. Runs in the ESXi Shell (busybox sh) as root.
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
out=$(esxcli system ntp get 2>/dev/null) || exit 1
en=$(printf '%s\n' "$out" | sed -n 's/^ *Enabled: *//p' | head -n 1)
srv=$(printf '%s\n' "$out" | sed -n 's/^ *Servers\{0,1\}: *//p' | head -n 1)
[ "$en" = true ] && [ -n "$srv" ] && echo compliant || echo "ntp enabled=$en servers=$srv"- Expected output
compliant
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
