TMA-ESXI9-2.3

Host must enable Secure Boot enforcement

MediumLevel 1Automatedvmware

Description

Enabling Secure Boot enforcement ensures that the host only loads UEFI drivers and applications with valid digital signatures, as part of the UEFI firmware standard. It requires support from the server's BIOS and hypervisor boot loader, and mandates that all ESXi kernel modules, drivers, and VIBs be signed by VMware or a trusted partner subordinate. The audit runs esxcli system settings encryption get and requires "Require Secure Boot: true". Runs in the ESXi Shell (busybox sh) as root.

How it is checked

Audit method: Shell command

shell
out=$(esxcli system settings encryption get 2>/dev/null) || exit 1
v=$(printf '%s\n' "$out" | awk -F': *' 'tolower($1) ~ /^ *require secure boot$/ {print $2; exit}' | tr 'A-Z' 'a-z' | sed 's/ *$//')
if [ "$v" = true ]; then echo compliant; else echo "Require Secure Boot: ${v:-not reported}"; fi
Expected output
compliant

How it is fixed

Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch

1. Enable UEFI Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 on the hardware. 2. Configure ESXi secure configuration/Secure Boot enforcement using the supported vSphere/ESXCLI procedure for the installed ESXi 8 build. 3. Reboot if required and verify both secureBoot.py -s and esxcli system settings encryption get
