Apache HTTP Server
TMA-APACHE-2.9
Ensure the Basic and Digest Authentication Modules are Disabled
Description
The Apache mod_auth_basic and mod_auth_digest modules support HTTP Basic Authentication and HTTP Digest Authentication respectively. The two authentication protocols are used to restrict access to users who provide a valid user name and password. Counts loaded modules matching auth_basic_module or auth_digest_module; expects 0. Uses the module list from apachectl -M (apache2ctl/httpd; needs root).
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
b=$(command -v apache2ctl || command -v apachectl || command -v httpd) || exit 1; m=$("$b" ${APACHE_CONF:+-f "$APACHE_CONF"} -M 2>/dev/null) || exit 1; printf '%s\n' "$m" | grep -Eic 'auth_(basic|digest)_module' || true- Expected output
0
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
Comment out LoadModule auth_basic_module / auth_digest_module (a2dismod -f auth_basic auth_digest) and use a stronger authentication method. Then run apachectl configtest and reload Apache.
