Ensure sudo visiblepw is configured
MediumLevel 1Automatedlinux
Description
The visiblepw sudo option controls whether sudo will prompt for a password on a terminal that cannot disable local echo. When not enabled (the default), sudo refuses to run rather than prompt for a password that would be displayed as it is typed.
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
shell
alt0() { command -v grep >/dev/null 2>&1 || { echo "step1: grep not installed"; return 1; }; o=$(bash -c 'grep -rPi -- '"'"'^\h*Defaults\h+([^#]+,\h*)?visiblepw\b'"'"' /etc/sudoers /etc/sudoers.d/' 2>/dev/null); [ -z "$o" ] || { echo "step1: $o" | head -c 300; return 1; }; }; if alt0; then echo compliant; fi- Expected output
compliant
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
Ensure sudo will not prompt for a password on a terminal where it would be displayed. Edit the appropriate sudoers file with visudo and remove any line that enables visiblepw, or explicitly disable it: # visudo Add or correct the line: Defaults !visiblepw
