TMA-AIX-8.2.3
Ensure syslog is not configured to receive logs from a remote client
Description
6/27/2025 1.1.0 UPDATED RECOMMENDATION: 5.3.4 - Ensure user guest is secured - Sections Modified: Remediation Procedure 6/27/2025 1.1.0 UPDATED RECOMMENDATION: 5.3.10 - Ensure System Accounts cannot access system using ftp. By default the syslogd daemon accepts all remote syslog messages as no authentication is required. This means that a hacker could flood a server with syslog messages and potentially fill up the /var filesystem. Audit: automated read-only check derived from the CIS audit procedure; it prints "compliant" when the control is met.
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
command -v ps >/dev/null 2>&1 || exit 1; out=$(ps -ef | grep "[/]usr/sbin/syslogd"); case "$out" in *" -r"*) echo compliant;; *) echo "syslogd not running with -r: $out";; esac- Expected output
compliant
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
If the server does not act as a central syslog server, suppress the logging of messages originating from remote servers: # /usr/bin/chssys -s syslogd -a "-r" Re-cycle syslogd to activate the configuration change: # /usr/bin/stopsrc -s syslogd # /usr/bin/startsrc -s syslogd
