IBM AIX
TMA-AIX-5.1.1
Ensure all local user accounts have a hashed password
Description
All (unlocked) accounts on the server must have a password. For this recommendation we look at the so-called files registery - as we cannot reliably review the entries kept in a centralized authentication system such as LDAP or Kerberos. An account password is a secret code word that must be entered to gain access to the account. If an account exists that has a blank password, multiple users may access the account without authentication and leave a weak audit trail. Audit: automated read-only check derived from the CIS audit procedure; it prints "compliant" when the control is met.
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
command -v awk >/dev/null 2>&1 || exit 1; [ -r /etc/security/passwd ] || exit 1; out=$( { awk '/^[^ \t*].*:[ \t]*$/ {u=$1} /^[ \t]*password[ \t]*=[ \t]*$/ {print "Account " u " has a blank password"}' /etc/security/passwd ; } 2>/dev/null ); [ -z "$out" ] && echo compliant || printf '%s\n' "$out" | head -n 20- Expected output
compliant
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
Check for accounts with an empty password field. If any, lock the account and assign an impossible password hash, as well as flag admin change (ADMCHG) to the password record. for user in $(/usr/bin/egrep -p "password = +$" /etc/security/passwd | awk '/:/ {print $1;}') do print "Locking account ${user} due to missing password" chuser account_locked='true' expires=0101000070 ${user} echo "$user:*" | chpasswd -e -f ADMCHG done
