TMA-AIX-4.4.1.1

Ensure NFS client mounts are disabled in /etc/filesystems

MediumLevel 1Automatedaix

Description

Disable automated mount of remote NFS shares. NFS is frequently exploited to gain unauthorized access to files and directories. Automated and/or pre-defined mounts should not exist. AIX does not allow the kernel service that enables NFS mounts to be disabled. Audit: no stanza in /etc/filesystems may use vfs = nfs.

How it is checked

Audit method: Shell command

shell
command -v grep >/dev/null 2>&1 || exit 1; [ -r /etc/filesystems ] || exit 1; out=$( { grep -E "^[[:blank:]]*vfs[[:blank:]]*=[[:blank:]]*nfs" /etc/filesystems ; } 2>/dev/null ); [ -z "$out" ] && echo compliant || printf '%s\n' "$out" | head -n 20
Expected output
compliant

How it is fixed

Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch

Ensure that there are no current NFS client mounts: mount |grep "nfs" cat /etc/filesystems |grep "nfs" The above commands should yield no output. Stop NFS services: stopsrc -g nfs
