Ensure pop3 daemon is not in use
MediumLevel 1Automatedaix
Description
This entry starts the pop3 service when required. The pop3 service provides a pop3 server. It supports the pop3 remote mail access protocol. It works with sendmail and bellmail. This service should be disabled if it is not required. Audit: the pop3 entry in /etc/inetd.conf must be commented out.
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
shell
command -v grep >/dev/null 2>&1 || exit 1; [ -e /etc/inetd.conf ] || { echo compliant; exit 0; }; out=$( { grep -E "^[[:blank:]]*pop3[[:blank:]]" /etc/inetd.conf ; } 2>/dev/null ); [ -z "$out" ] && echo compliant || printf '%s\n' "$out" | head -n 20- Expected output
compliant
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
In /etc/inetd.conf, comment out the pop3 entry and refresh the inetd process: chsubserver -r inetd -C /etc/inetd.conf -d -v 'pop3' -p tcp lssrc -s inetd && refresh -s inetd
