TMA-AIX-4.2.1
Ensure NIS client is not installed
Description
The Network Information Service (NIS), formerly known as Yellow Pages, is a client- server directory service protocol used to distribute system configuration files. The NIS client was used to bind a machine to an NIS server and receive the distributed configuration files. The NIS service is inherently an insecure system that has been vulnerable to DOS attacks, buffer overflows and has poor authentication for querying NIS maps. NIS generally has been replaced by such protocols as Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). Audit: automated read-only check derived from the CIS audit procedure; it prints "compliant" when the control is met.
How it is checked
Audit method: Shell command
command -v lslpp >/dev/null 2>&1 || exit 1; lslpp -L >/dev/null 2>&1 || exit 1; out=$( { lslpp -L | grep -i 'bos.net.nis.client' ; } 2>/dev/null ); [ -z "$out" ] && echo compliant || printf '%s\n' "$out" | head -n 20- Expected output
compliant
How it is fixed
Fix method: Guidance or infrastructure patch
Ensure that all of the NIS daemons are inactive: stopsrc -g yp De-install the NIS client software: installp -u bos.net.nis.client
