UNIX domain sockets provide secure local inter-process communication for database connections on the same host. When combined with certificate-based authentication (see section 6.0), UNIX domain sockets offer the most secure mechanism for local database access.

Check the --socket-dir used by cockroach start (default $TMPDIR); the socket (.s.PGSQL.26257) directory should be owned by cockroach and not world-writable (e.g. /var/run/cockroach, 755). Confirm cockroach sql --certs-dir=certs --host=<socket dir> --user=root works only with valid client certificates and that unauthenticated local logins fail.
